What is Graphic Design- Part Three Joshua M. Smith Laser Etched Pieces

http://www.behance.net/gallery/Lasered-Etched/1400407

Below are some commissioned artists etched work for a show last month in San Francisco. I love the detail in the illustrations especially the way the animals characteristics have been captured just using a single tone. The wooden backdrop and the grain of the wood adds to each design and makes the detail in the faces of the animals flare.

A potential audience could be high end skate shops selling limited addition decks to fans of skateboarding and design, I know i would definitely have one of these mounted on my wall. Using the skateboard deck for such a detailed piece of artwork almost changed its use from just being a skateboard,  instead it becomes a canvass this opens the end of the market that they could be directed at.

The deck above is definitely my favourite, the thin lines around the owls eyes really capture the texture of its feathers, this fine delicate style of work is reflected on by the art nouveau patterns in the background. Badaboom looks fresh!

In design Interesting Magazine Layouts

Below are a few different interesting magazine layouts collected to help to inspire my ways of thinking in terms of layout.

This layout inspires me the most out of the selected images on this thread. The use of 3 colours has worked really well to create an eye catching and interesting layout. The double page spread is initially seen as two separate pages but when taking in the information in front of you they become more interlinking every time you glance back. The white yellow and black is informative and doesn't complicate the page. The layout of the type is also arrange in a way that's pleasing to the eyes, on the left the letters have been arranged to a 5 x 5 grid and then on the right the columns have been split into 9 sections.

Speaking From Experience....Letman Typographic Posters

I can see the graffiti influence Letman has within his work and I think this adds a very playful characteristic to his lettering. By using the same backing for each poster you can see the progression of experimentation from theme to theme.

Speaking From Experience...Andre Beato

More fantastic examples of typographic posters using techniques that i would like to explore. I like flowing lettering and how each letter can continue across a whole word but still remain legible.

The typographic posters below really caught my attention because of how flowing the structures of each letters are and how they come together to work as a whole. The simplistic colour scheme, combination of old and new techniques and the arrangement of the words all work together as a very effective piece of design. definitely a big inspiration to my work!

Speaking From Experience... Typographic posters

Really like the poster above, It strips graphic design down to its initial processes and explains that the key starting point to anything within graphic design is your thought process at the start of it. I like the imitation of Russian revolutionary design using a serif typeface with clashing colours like red and black.

I would like this style of work to influence my own however in terms of producing a series of typographic posters i want to work with much more interesting letter forms and typefaces.

Speaking from Experience Motivational Design Posters

I really like the poster above, the black on yellow print immediately catches your attention because of the contrast in the sharpness of the yellow and the solidness of the black. The way its been layed out has been done so that your eyes flow down each line whilst at the same time the use of 6 typefaces doesn't over complicate the poster but instead enhances it visually.

Again the key element to the poster above being very visually intriguing is the colours and the layout of the type. Centered type that's sans serif is simplistic and crisp reflecting on the meaning behind the quote that's being used.

What is a Line? Moleskin Sketchbook Ideas

A collection of Moleskin sketchbook examples which i want to use a big influence to my own sketchbook.

What is a Line? Sketchbook Pages

A collection of some nicely laid out sketchbook pages.

The type in the top left hand corner of the image above really appeals to me, I like how the black cloud gels with the pastel orange background making the white type jump into the foreground of the page.
